    1.0 out of 5 stars Unfinished, October 29, 2011
This review is from: Sword of the Stars II: Lords of Winter [Download] (Software Download)
This game was released in a horribly unfinished state, to the point of being effectively unplayable. At this point, the game essentially involves making arbitrary decisions ("do I make a space-warehouse or space-hangar?") with no information on how those decisions affect gameplay. The user interface is incomplete and buggy, not to mention unwieldy and sometimes outright confusing. Not that it matters, as the game is woefully unstable and tends to crash.

Buying this game at this point in time is equivalent to paying 40$ for the privilege of being an early beta tester.

On the bright side, the developers have a reputation for supporting their products well. Eventually, this game might become playable and, hopefully, fun.

Until there is news to the contrary, however, this game is a woefully poor purchase.

At release, this game is impossible to suggest to anyone. Major features are blatantly missing, with the in game encyclopedia, vital for understanding a complex game like this, mostly empty. The in game options menu is grayed out, inaccessible and useless, and the scenarios that should be in are missing.

What you have when you look past that is a game that clearly has a lot of complicated systems, but no way to explain them short of boring experimentation. Even something as simple as trying to understand what your ships do is impossible to find in game, something that the previous game handled elegantly.

At this point, with no in game help or documentation the only people that could play this buggy, unfinished mess are hard-core fans of Swords of the Stars 1 that can grope their way though. Nobody else should touch this game. If they were giving it away as a free beta test it wouldn't be worth the time of anyone but the most hardcore at this point.

4.0 out of 5 stars No longer the game it was at release, May 27, 2012

Allright! Let's start with some history. When SotS 2 was released, it was "a pile of blown apart code and unstable features."

Those are the words of Mecron, the head of Kerberos Productions, and a lead designer in the game. And good GRAVY, was the man right. Read any review from the last half of 2011, and no matter how bad that review sounds, keep telling yourself that the writer was absolutely correct.

Well, it's been a long time, and things have changed. The game now is to its release state what a mass of carbon molecules is to a diamond. That's not to say the game is in the all-clear- minor bugs are still being squashed- but all that remains before Kerberos presents its long awaited finished product is the final spit and polish. If you have reservations about buying this game based on its history, don't- rather than looking at what the game was, look at what it has become through the efforts of the designers and the community.

    So, that's the... Read more
